Training and Personnel Development

A major focus of PEPNet is personnel development and related training activities. Each PEPNet regional center develops a plan for local, state, and regional training events; in addition, the centers work together to offer national training activities. PEPNet staff members may deliver the training themselves or work with other colleagues in areas of special interest or expertise; technology may be utilized to deliver training via webcast, satellite downlink, or other distance education technology, when appropriate. Continuing education units may be offered for some activities. Working collaboratively with other groups (e.g. state departments of education, state offices of vocational rehabilitation, centers for independent living, state chapters of AHEAD, etc.), PEPNet may sponsor presenters or develop partnerships to support training activities. Participant stipends to attend training activities may be offered to stakeholders in each regional center.

Because it's not always possible for individuals to participate in training activities, PEPNet may ask presenters to share their handouts or presentation slides with their colleagues by posting them on the PEPNet website. Transcripts of roundtable discussions may be posted, or webcasts may be archived for future viewing.

Online training offers participants flexibility in accessing professional development opportunities. PEPNet offers several online training programs on a variety of topics, including an overview of providing services to students who are deaf or hard or hearing, developing skills as a notetaker, and addressing transition issues for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
