Abstract
One aspect of successful teaching involves enabling teachers to maximize their instructional effectiveness which includes meeting the challenge of diversity that deaf students bring to the classroom. In reaction to this diversity, there has been a strong call for teachers to be sensitive to the culture of deaf people and the preferences of many deaf student to using American Sign Language. In this presentation, participants will take an active role in looking at how their knowledge of Deaf culture and appreciation of ASL can be used to enhance their teaching. But equally important to the academic success of a deaf student are the unique skills of the teacher, therefore participants will examine different methods for integrating new information and skills with what they already have.
