Personal Factors That Influence Deaf College Students' Academic Success, by John A. Albertini, Ronald R. Kelly, and Mary Karol Matchett from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Article Summary:
Academic skills are necessary, but not always sufficient, for success in post-secondary education. This research article explores both academic skills and personal characteristics of students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and their impact on student outcomes. This study found that, in addition to academic preparation, student motivation to complete their education and soft skills such as time management played a role in the likelihood students stayed in their academic programs beyond the first year. This article discusses implications for retention and post-secondary program completion for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Click here to read full article.
