Webinar on Deafness in Translation: Accommodating deaf and hard of hearing students from other countries
Location: Online
This session will use several case studies to illustrate common issues which surface when students who are deaf or hard of hearing, from countries other than the U.S., enroll at American postsecondary institutions. The reasons for their enrollment may range from standard study-abroad programs to family moves to the U.S. to the need for American licensure to practice their professions, but many similar issues arise across situations. Through case-study discussion of accommodations processes, we will illustrate significant cultural, legal, and educational issues, including but not limited to gender relations, time concepts, socioeconomic class, touch, eye contact, manners, names, and disability, all of which can affect the application, enrollment, and accommodations processes.
