Campus Wide Compliance
I am not sure this is the correct forum but...here goes.
I am desperately trying to get my college to be aware of the interpreting needs on campus. We do not have a large DHH student body, but they are an engaging and active group.
Rather than finding out that a student or a member of the community wants to attend a staged performance, lecture or conference a week or the night before the event, I would prefer to be informed during the planning stages that there is an event that has a script that "may" need interpreting, or a lecture coming at time when I "could" have all the interpreters out in classes or heaven forbid none scheduled to be on campus at all.
After years trying different methods to make the students aware, they are coming around. They know to request services in a reasonable amount of time, but the staff and Faculty...yikes! My biggest gripe is with the staged performances. Departments know at least a semester in advance what play they are performing, who is coming to lecture on what scientific topic and when.
Does anyone have a policy on campus that you are to be notified regarding plays and lectures. Are the posters displayed on campus and online invluding a notation that accomadations can be provided but the ticket buyer must notify the college at the time that they purchase the tickets? What if tickets are not necessary...how do the patrons know who to contact, how are you informed. Too many times I have been caught off guard. Fortunately, I have a fabulous staff and outsource supports. I have been able to figure something out. I do not want to wait until my luck runs out and I am really stuck!
Finally, what about the budget for the interpeter. As you know last minute requests are incredibly expensive when compared to anticipated requests. Does the expense come out of your District budget, DSPS/DHH budget or is it the responsibility of the department that is sponsoring the event?
I realize ultimately it is one lump sum of money allocated to the college, but really isn't there some responsibility on the part of the departments to share the cost especially, when attendance is not a class requirement.
Suggestions, Advice, Insight? What am I missing??
Thanks
