Hello,

What professional standards are out there to assess c-print or typewell captionist standards. We have a few independent contractors who want to work for us, but other than years of experience, I don't know how to tell if their skills are appropriate for the classroom or not.

I can speak to TypeWell. Along with a resume listing their experience and references, you can have them submit to you their record of completion for The TypeWell Course. This will provide you with some information about their skill set, strengths/weaknesses and the initial grade they received for completing the course. Ask for a list of professional development courses they've taken since completing the training, and what they do to increase or maintain their skills. If it has been more than 1 year since they have provided TypeWell transcription, they will need to retake the training.

Contact TypeWell for a reference and feedback. They may be aware of their skill set, their experience and the transcribers general reputation. Transcribers with severe issues are often reported to TypeWell.

Ask for and contact their references. As important as their technical skill is their interpersonal skills and ethics. How are they to work with? Are they appropriate in the classroom? Have there been any ethical concerns? For TypeWell, refer to the Code of Ethics for professional conduct. http://typewell.com/ethics.html

You can also do an observation. Have them transcribe all or part of a class with you or someone designated by you watching to see how they handle material, how accurate they are, etc.

Some outside agencies do provide mentoring and skills assessment for schools who want to screen established transcribers to work on their campus.
