Interpreters for Clinical Rotation

Hello, everyone :)

I’m posting on behalf of a colleague who is wondering if anyone has any experience with arranging for and providing interpreters for a Deaf student who is doing a rotation in a hospital setting, possibly out of state. I’m hoping to find other institutions who have provided this accommodation before, how it was handled, and how successful it was. This particular student has used speech-to-text services before, but prefers interpreters. The possibility of VRI services was also mentioned. The location of the internship has yet to be determined, but the concerns are:

• If the student does choose to go out of state, is the university still responsible for arranging and funding interpreters?

• If yes, what is the best way to arrange for interpreters in a different state?

• Has anyone ever used VRI for a medical student doing rotations? If so, how did it work out?

Thanks in advance!
