Upcoming Regional Roundtables

PEPNet-Midwest and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and the Wisconsin Technical College System would like to invite you to attend an upcoming Educational Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services Regional Roundtable on Friday, May 7th, 2010 at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay. A Regional Roundtable is an all-day FREE event, designed to bring up-to-date information, issues and best practices to those working with deaf and hard of hearing students and individuals in secondary and postsecondary environments or transitioning to or out of postsecondary. Roundtables will benefit the following groups:

  • postsecondary and secondary disability service coordinators and educators
  • secondary deaf educational specialists
  • interpreters and speech-to-text providers
  • vocational rehabilitation counselors
  • transition coordinators
  • disability-related professionals
  • parents

8:30 - 9:00 Registration

9:00 - 9:30 Welcome, introductions and PEPNet services overview

9:30 - 10:45 Three concurrent workshops:
Session a: Advocacy. This session outlines the what, where and how of fostering self-advocacy skills. (Presenter: Cassie Franklin)
Session b: The Basics of Remote Services. An outline of the basic technology requirements for remote interpreting or captioning services, how to prepare and where to buy some of these services. (Presenter, Bambi Riehl)
Session c: Can You Hear Me Now? / Assistive Technology and Communication Strategies for Cochlear Implant Users. A discussion about why assistive listening devices (ALDs) are important, the different technologies, and the implementation and basic troubleshooting of ALD's, and how a CI works, which assistive technology is appropriate, and how strategies can maximize the communication experience. (Presenter, Heidi Adams)

11:00 - 12:15 Three concurrent workshops:
Session d: Transition Planning. An overview about transition under IDEA including federal indicators #13 and #14. IEP meetings and transition goals/objectives will be discussed. (Presenter, Greta Palmberg)
Session e: Assessing Postsecondary Accommodations. The decisions points by which service providers can determine effective accommodation services for postsecondary Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.(Presenter, Cassie Franklin)
Session f: Post Production Captioning. An outline of the legal issues involved, a basic overview of the technology available, and suggestions for implementing postproduction captioning of videos, DVD's and streaming content in educational settings.(Presenter, Ginny Chiaverina)

12:15 - 1:30 Lunch on your own

1:30 - 2:45 Two concurrent workshops:
Session g: Transitioning to Work Panel Discussion. Participants will engage in a discussion about the issues involved in assisting d/hh individuals on their road to successful employment with several jobs/rehab/transition specialists. (Panel moderator, Heidi Adams, panelists to be announced)
Session h: Postsecondary Deaf/Hard of Hearing Programs Discussion. Interpreters, advisors and administrators share information exchange and updates, including info about the Wisconsin licensure bill by Joel Mankowski from 1:30 - 2:00. (Anyone can raise issues or bring current information to share.)

3:00 - 4:00 Open discussion in small group format based on special interests, such as K-12, speech-to-text, interpreting, licensure, etc.

Presenter Bios:

HEIDI ADAMS
Heidi Adams is the PEPNet-Midwest Outreach Specialist at the Center for Sight & Hearing in Rockford, IL. She has worked as a speech language pathologist as well as a VR counselor and Planning Specialist for public VR. She is a late deafened adult.

GINNY CHIAVERINA
Ginny Chiaverina is the Associate Director of PEPNet-Midwest. She previously served as an Outreach Specialist for PEPNet-Midwest and was the Program Manager of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program. Ginny completed her Certificate of Interpreter Training at Wabaunsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL and her MS.Ed. in Administrative Leadership from University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee.

CASSIE FRANKLIN
Cassie Franklin works for PEPNet-Midwest as an Outreach Specialist for Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas, and also manages the PEPNet listserv. Cassie graduated from UWM with her Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work in 1997, and is currently studying for her Master's degree in the same area. Prior to working at UWM, Cassie worked as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Human and Family Services and as a Child Care Counselor with the Wisconsin School for the Deaf.

GRETA PALMBERG
Greta Palmberg is the Transition Specialist with PEPNet-Midwest and also works as a Transition Support Instructor for Intermediate District 287 in Plymouth, MN. She has worked in the field of special education as a teacher, presenter, and trainer for over 20 years. She earned a MEd in Educational Administration and a BS in Special Education and has teaching certification in the areas of Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Learning Disabilities, Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, and Developmental Cognitive Disabilities.

BAMBI RIEHL
Bambi Riehl works for PEPNet-Midwest as an Outreach Specialist for Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. Bambi has worked with deaf/hard of hearing students in the postsecondary environment since 1988 at both UW-Milwaukee and UW-Madison. She is also a nationally certified sign language interpreter, interested in video remote interpreting. Her BA in English/Speech Communications is from UW-Eau Claire and her interpreter training is from St. Paul College.
