Upcoming Regional Roundtables

PEPNet-Midwest and Wichita State University would like to invite you to attend an upcoming FREE Regional Roundtable on Friday, September 10th, 2010 at Wichita State University, Kansas.

A Regional Roundtable is an all-day event, designed to bring up-to-date information, issues and best practices to those working with deaf and hard of hearing students and individuals in secondary and postsecondary environments or transitioning to or out of postsecondary. Roundtables will benefit the following groups:

  • postsecondary and secondary disability service coordinators and educators
  • secondary deaf educational specialists
  • interpreters and speech-to-text providers
  • vocational rehabilitation counselors
  • transition coordinators
  • disability-related professionals
  • parents

We will be offering sessions for those who are new to deaf and hard of hearing topics and those who have been in the field for a long time.

We are planning the following sessions:

8:30 - 9:00 Registration

9:00 - 9:30 Welcome, introductions and PEPNet services overview

9:30 - 10:45 - Three concurrent workshops:

1. Advocacy Skills for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students: This session will outline the "what," "where" and "how" of advocacy skills. (Presenter: Cassie Franklin)

2. Transition Planning: An overview of current information about transition under IDEA including federal indicators #13 and #14. Student-led IEP meetings and transition goals/objectives in the areas of postsecondary education, independent living and employment will be discussed. (Presenter: Amy Hebert)

3. Assessing Accommodation Needs in Postsecondary Settings: A presentation of the decisions points by which service providers can determine the most effective accommodation services for postsecondary Deaf/Hard of Hearing students. (Presenter: Bambi Riehl)

11:00 - 12:15 -Three concurrent workshops:

1. Advocacy Skills for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students (repeat): This session will outline the "what," "where" and "how" of advocacy skills. (Presenter: Cassie Franklin)

2. Testing Equity: A discussion of the challenges and opportunities for testing students who are deaf/hard of hearing. (Presenter: Ginny Chiaverina)

3. Remote Interpreting and Captioning Services: An outline of the basic technology requirements for remote interpreting or captioning services, how to prepare and where to buy some of these services. (Presenter: Bambi Riehl)

12:15 - 1:30 Lunch on your own (dining options available on campus, optional iTransition overview presentation will be in the conference room)

1:30 - 2:45 - Two concurrent workshops:

1. Transitioning to the World of Work: A panel of professionals from your area will discuss the issues involved in assisting deaf/hard of hearing individuals on their road to successful employment. (Presenter: Rebecca Rosenthal)

2. Promoting Classroom Access: Learn strategies for working with instructors in making classrooms visually accessible for deaf and hard of hearing students in postsecondary and also about Universal Design basic principles. (Presenter: Ginny Chiaverina)

3:00 - 4:00 Open discussion in small group format based on special interests

The following PEPNet staff members and community members will be presenting:

GINNY CHIAVERINA
Ginny Chiaverina is the Associate Director of PEPNet-Midwest. She previously served as an Outreach Specialist for PEPNet-Midwest and was the Program Manager of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program. Ginny completed her Certificate of Interpreter Training at Wabaunsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL and her MS.Ed. in Administrative Leadership from University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee.

CASSIE FRANKLIN
Cassie Franklin works for PEPNet-Midwest as an Outreach Specialist for Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas, and also manages the PEPNet listserv. Cassie graduated from UWM with her Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work, and is currently studying for her Master's degree in the same area. Cassie worked with UWM's Deaf and Hard of Hearing college students as the D/HH Counselor for 7 years before joining PEPNet full time. Cassie also worked as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Human and Family Services.

BAMBI RIEHL
Bambi Riehl has been an Outreach Specialist for PEPNet since 1997, and has worked with deaf students in postsecondary environments since 1988. She is also an RID CI/CT certified interpreter. From 1988 to 1995, Bambi worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a staff interpreter, interpreter coordinator and student advisor. She has since worked in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program since 1995.

AMY HEBERT
Amy Hebert is an Independent Consultant with over twenty years of experience working in the field of deafness. She has provided professional development activities and technical assistance in the area of transition both locally and nationally. Her background includes a wide range of experiences such as; Transition Consultant/Trainer, Educational and Community Interpreter, Deafness Researcher and VR Counselor for the Deaf. Currently, Amy is pursuing her Ph.D. (ABD) in the Rehabilitation Research and Education program from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

REBECCA ROSENTHAL
Rebecca Rosenthal is the Executive Director of the Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (KCDHH) which is housed within the Kansas Rehabilitation Services. She is currently a member of the PEPNet Midwest Advisory Committee.
