An Inside Look:
Community Interpreting & Educational Interpreting:
You Mean There is a Difference?
by Melissa Hines, CI/CT
June 15, 2007

This two-hour TeleTraining was designed to shed light on the similarities and differences of both educational and community interpreting environments. Although both are considered “interpreting”, historically both environments have not been accepted as the same. Why this is the case? Participants are invited to step outside of their comfort zone and see things through each others’ eyes.

In this TeleTraining discussions included:

  • How community and educational interpreters compare in their duties
  • How are they affected by the Code of Professional Conduct or a standard Code of Ethics
  • What are the laws affecting both community and educational interpreters
  • How the _Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf_ views the two fields
  • How the educational and community interpreting fields affect each other
  • Testing and YOU — what are your options and why
  • How you can expand in your field and the resources to do so
