Acrobat Connect Pro™ enables users to securely share presentations, desktop applications, multimedia, and other content materials from a desktop. Hundreds of participants may access these materials. Acrobat Connect Pro uses a web browser and the Adobe Flash® Player which is already installed on more than 90% of U.S. personal computers.
Acrobat Connect Pro is a platform for delivering media-rich, virtual classroom sessions or self-paced courses and can be used to host live web events and training. Connect Pro offers secure, instant access with no software downloads required for participants.
Here are some of the access features and considerations for using Acrobat Connect Pro that were discussed at PEPNet's Think Tank-2:
Rochester Institute of Technology adopted Acrobat Connect Pro in 2005 when the software was known as Macromedia Breeze. RIT has since expanded its use of Connect Pro for many different purposes. At RIT, Connect Pro is used for faculty lectures, student team work, guest speakers, software demos, and pre-recorded sessions that are available on a scheduled basis or anytime through RIT's webcast archive.
RIT now has more than 1,150 unique Acrobat Connect Pro users. In fall 2009 RIT had 85 faculty using Connect Pro in some form and had 334 deaf or hard of hearing students using the videoconferencing software in live class sessions or for team projects. Courses at RIT often require students to intern off-campus. Connect Pro enables RIT to interact with its students wherever they are.
Access Features and Considerations for Use:
- RIT used a third-party vendor to develop a captioning feed with CART-style captioning. Real-time captioning rolls as the presenter begins speaking. Text chat is used by students who want to connect with faculty outside of normal faculty office hours.
- RIT has found that the cost of using Acrobat Connect Pro is lower than other video conferencing technologies. RIT has used Connect Pro for captioned videos, but has found that the video is not of the highest quality. New third-party tools will enable RIT to upgrade the video quality. RIT is experimenting with speech-to-text and Dragon Naturally Speaking via Connect Pro.
