Polycom is a powerful, high-performance videoconferencing system, widely used in business and education environments. Polycom requires a substantial investments in hardware and software.
Polycom accommodates a wide range of educational programming and meetings. Participants can share documents, drawings, movies, and other information. Polycom users can record, archive and provide podcasts of lectures, presentations and projects.
Here are some of the access features and considerations for using Polycom that were discussed at PEPNet's Think Tank-2:
- Captioning can be done on site or remotely. Remote captioning is provided via modem.
- Captioning differs from the process used in broadcast television captioning.
- Polycom's technology is encoder type. Be sure that the captioning uses broadcasting captioning software.
- Polycom's captioning display goes at a fixed pace. Normal television captioning goes at the speaker's rate of speed. Polycom is a fixed-paced scroll and has a dedicated place on screen where captions are placed.
- Firewalls within the systems of distance users can affect accessibility.
